Still Scared of Garden Pests? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Be

I’ve heard it over and over...
“I don’t want to spend all that time just to have everything get eaten.”

That fear makes sense, but it’s built on a misunderstanding of how pest pressure actually works. Most people think you have to be constantly spraying, inspecting, or researching every insect you see. You don’t.

In fact, the best way to deal with pests...
is to stop them before they ever become a problem.

Let’s Clear Something Up: Bugs Aren’t the Enemy

A garden without any bugs is a dead garden. Seriously.

Some bugs are troublemakers, sure. But others like ladybugs, lacewings, and certain wasps are your best line of defense. They eat the bad guys, keep populations in check, and do it for free.

When you know how to attract and keep the right insects around, you don’t have to play whack-a-mole with every pest you see. You’ve built a system that supports itself.

Here's the Truth: Prevention Beats Panic

We don’t nuke our soil to keep it “clean.”
We build it up so strong that pests don’t take over in the first place.

A few things I teach inside my course and guide:

  • How planting densely actually confuses pests

  • How to bring in beneficial bugs using companion plants and natural attractors

  • What weakens plants and makes them magnets for pests, and how to avoid it

  • Why row cover is your best friend in certain seasons

Pest pressure isn’t about luck, it’s about strategy.
And once you see it that way, the fear fades.

One Simple Thing You Can Try This Week

If you’re already seeing holes in your leaves, here’s a quick experiment...

  • Check underneath your kale, lettuce, or chard in the morning

  • If you see clusters of tiny bugs (likely aphids), spray them off with a strong blast from your hose using the fan setting

  • That’s it — no sprays, no stress, just a simple way to interrupt the pattern before it gets worse

You don’t have to identify every bug.
You just have to notice and respond early.

You’re More Capable Than You Think

A few bugs don’t mean your garden is failing. They mean it’s alive.

The key is knowing what to watch for, what to ignore, and how to build a space that naturally stays healthy. That’s what I teach, and it’s way simpler than most people think.
